dogs going into heat symptoms
Why should a 6-year-old Rheem heat pump need the coils cleaned?

Has anyone else had this problem? We clean the manufacturer’s filter once a month. We do not live in dusty/dirty conditions (paved road, no nearby construction). As for pets, we have one cat and one dog, both with short hair. I am concerned that we are having to have this cleaning done so soon (will cost about $500+). What brought the problem to our attention was wet carpet; the system was leaking into a closet. I am just curious if this is a normal defect or something that is a symptom of a bigger issue. Is there another filter we should be using. The manufacturer’s filter does not seem like it would catch much; is black strands that are cris-crossed in a mesh pattern, but does not seem to be a tight enough mesh to catch most dust/particles. Can we use another filter. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I don’t want to have to do this again in another few years.

The problem is not everything gets caught in the filters (you can buy better filter which help), some dust gets thru and as this dust builds up on your cooling coils the exchange becomes less and less efficient to the point that your coil begins to ice up which would cause the water leaking problem (the ice melting).
With mine, being that I can just simply remove the filter and slip in there, I normally clean myself every year with a nylon brush (must be careful not to bend the coil’s metal fins) . Every three years or so, I have the whole coil removed and cleaned by a professional which normally costs me under $100.00
