after birth dogs

why wont my dog eat or drink and seems very lethargic after birth?
my dog gave birth to 8 puppies 24hours ago….4 were stillborn. Momma was doin well yesterday but today she is not wanting to eat or drink…seems to be really lethargic. She is allowing pups to nurse and cleans them constantly. im worried that something is wrong w her the last pup she delivered was at least 12 hours after the rest. i am taking her to the vet first thing in the mornin.
The best thing you can do, especially as some of these pups were doa, is take her and the surviving puppies to a vet to be checked out. There could be any number of things going on with her, some more serious than others it has to be said – did she expel all the placenta for eg? She may have more milk than these pups can cope with (and nature does know best in terms of food intake) and has a touch of mastitis which will make her feel pretty miserable. Without seeing what’s going on, it’s impossible to say. Just that she should be drinking, even if she’s not very interested in food at this point.
If she deteriorates between now and when you can get to a vet – get her seen as an emergency. To be honest, if I wasn’t happy that my b itch was doing okay (and because of those dead puppies), I’d phone a vet for advice in any case, regardless of the time of day!
