Do dogs mate or breed in winter?
my cousin got a male Fox Terrier cross and a female Pomeranian. they had the first set of puppies in summer, then they were all given away around autumn.so do they mate or breed again in winter? do most dogs breed at this time at all?
Absolutely! Dogs will breed any time they are in estrous (heat) and will be in heat roughly twice per year. It doesn’t matter to a domestic dog what time of year it is. (wolves are different) However, they do seem to have a higher percentage of having estrous in the same two seasons for all of their lives. I have had many January puppies, so the dogs mated in November. I am sure that my dogs have had litters during each month over the past 39 years. ,Also, Females that live together influence each other’s estrous cycle. Right now, all of my females will come in within about 3 weeks of each other.
