H1N8 Dog Flu Virus Vaccine?
Has anyone had their dog(s) vaccinated for the dog flu yet? My area has recently been affected and the number of dogs getting sick is increasing.
I’ve got mine scheduled for the initial shot tomorrow morning and would like to know what others have experienced with the shots.
ADD: No, I’m on the East Coast though and its our city’s Emergency Management Office issuing the notice to all of the folks in our area. They state that over 100 dogs have become sick with the virus.
Last outbreak I heard of was in Virginia. If you wish to get the shots for your pup please do so, but don’t buy into the hype that this is a “killer virus”. I was told that my dog was garanteed to catch it if he didn’t have the shots and there was a 20% mortality rate. I was lied to. Mortality rate is less than 1% and that is only in dogs that are already weakened from other condidiotns. It seems as though more and more people have no trouble lying to you if they think it’s in your best interest to do what they want you to.
You from around Philadelphia? I don’t want to go into too much detail here but I researched it out pretty good and here’s what I got.
1. Unless your dog is very young or very old or prone to respiratory illnesses H3N8 results in a very mild illness that is over in around five days. It’s like a cold.
2. Some Vets and kennels are pushing the vaccine because there is big $$$ in it for them.
3. There has been ZERO cases that I could find that any dog has gotten sick from getting the shot, but trials were done on around 750 dogs only. Still, the folks that I know who got the shot for their pups have reported no problems. In other words getting the shot should not harm your dog or make him ill.
My gut feeling? It’s all hype.
Also know that if your dog contracts H3N8 it will build the antibodies and therefore be immune to future infection.
Please feel free to ask if this wasn’t enough.
