Dog breeds that are friendly with other dogs?
Im interested in getting a puppy, i was wondering what specific breeds are friendly with other dogs? Is it more dependant on breed, training, or just specific dog relationships? I want to take my dog out to see other dogs and not have to worry about the possibility of fighting
Unfortunately things are not as simple as listing certain dog friendly breeds, ALL dogs, whether they are crossbred or purebred, have the potential to be aggressive towards other dogs. This is dependent on both nature (genetics) and nurture (training, socialisation).
In saying this, there are breeds of dogs that are more likely, through genetics and specific breeding for these genetics, to show aggressive tendencies towards other dogs. Be aware that many websites/info are not very objective when it comes to describing the temperament of breeds.
I bet i could find information on ANY breed of dog that says it is great with kids for example! Also be aware that every dog is an individual and just because the breed is generally known for dog friendliness this does not mean that the particular individual will be! For example, there are labs that bite kids, there are cavaliers that are hyperactive, there are lazy border collies and there are pitbulls that absolutely adore other dogs.
In saying this, if this is priority in choosing a dog i would not suggest:
Pitbull terriers
Staffordshire terriers
Terriers in general are often more dominant around other dogs
Siberian Husky
Malamute
Boxers/German Shepherds can often be wary/dominant around larger dogs
On the otherhand, retriever breeds tend to be quite dog social as do spaniels.
This is a generalisation, don’t be offended if your favourite breed is mentioned!
Oh and finally, no matter what dog you end up getting, when you have your dog around other dogs you SHOULD be worried about the possibility of fighting, whether your dog is the instigator or another dog it is just a reality of having dogs interact together that their may be fisticuffs or worse…
