Garlic and flea control for dogs?

Okay, a friend of mine told me that, if you give your dog a small amount of garlic a day, it will eventually get rid of the fleas. I have a year old dauchshund, he’s not infested, but he does have a problem with fleas. I’ve tried shampoos, collars and nothing is giving him relief. I looked around on the internet and there seems to be some people that believe that garlic is toxic to animals. I don’t want to give him something that could be poisonous to him, but my friend has given her dog garlic for most of his adult life. I’m confused, is it poisonous or not and has anyone here actually used garlic with an adverse affect? i.e. pet has passed due to poisoning.

Raw or spoiled garlic is potentially dangerous and can be fatal for dogs. You should only feed them cooked garlic in small doses.
However, using a flea repellant like Advantage is a lot easier and won’t give them rank breath! I have used Advantage and it works wonders. I currently use Sentinel. This medication does have to be prescribed by a vet but it protects from fleas as well as many kinds of worms plus heartworms. It also sterilizes the fleas that do get on the dog, which is great if you have other animals in the house that aren’t on any flea medicine.
If you are opposed to meds or want a more natural approach to the flea problem put Lemongrass or Citronella Oil in your pets shampoo. I’ve never personally tried this but I’ve heard it works.
