How can I stop my two dogs from barking so much?
I have two dogs- a mini poodle and a mixed shephard. They bark at every little thing all day long. They also egg each other on! I am at my wits end because they wake my baby up from naps during the day. I have tried yelling, praising, spray collars and a clicker from training class (what a joke.) What works?
Unfortunately dogs are pack animals, and when one starts, the other is bound to follow.
Removing the reason for the barking will help! Yelling won’t work because in their eyes, you are simply joining in. Their training needs reinforcing – they need to know that they must respond to YOU first, and not to each other. Check out why they are barking, whether it’s justified and then tell them okay, it’s fine and now SHUT UP/ enough!! It might help to take them out on a one-to-one with you (training classes?) to break the dependence on each other. But noisy dogs are difficult to stop, if this has been going on for a while.
If your baby needs his down time, I suggest you may have to separate these two while he’s napping, but even in different parts of the house, if one starts, the other one will start. But at least you only have one to stop – and the other one should stop too.
