dogs menstruate

dogs menstruate
Dogs vs. Cats in heat.. I’ve always wondered this..?

When dogs go through heat, they menstruate if they’re not fixed. When cats go through heat, they never do get a period. What is the difference in their anatomy that causes this?

Dogs do not menstruate. They have a bloody discharge that will turn to a cloudy discharge when they are “ready” to mate. But it’s not a menstrual cycle. A menstrual cycle in a female human means the eggs have been shed and so the ovulation cycle is over. With dogs it’s the opposite, the discharge means they are actively ovulating and are ready to mate. It is also an attraction method so that males will sense (and smell) that she is “ready.”

I don’t know why cats don’t have a discharge. But you’re right, they don’t. They also don’t swell as female dogs do when they’re in heat. With a cat, you must go by behavior rather than outward signs.
