In snow, how do dog prints, human prints(boots) and snowshoe prints vary according to gait (increasing speed)?
The typical dog walk in snow leaves an uneven 4 print pattern, sometimes with a tail drag mark. As the dog speeds up its gait, the track line become more narrow, but the space between the front and hind feet gets larger. A very well seasoned dog, in good shape, will leave tracks almost in a perfect line, and a wild canid (fox, wolf, coyote) will often step its hind foot into the same track as the front foot.
A human bare-booting in most snow of any depth will do what we hikers despise- post-hole the trail. The tracks will be uneven, and will be of a depth that is 8″-3′, depending on the snow pack, leaving treacherous openings for anyone in snow shoes coming along the trail behind them. It is very difficult for a human to run in deep snow, as it is extremely exhausting just to walk.
A human on snow shoes has a wider stance than a person in bare boots, and can change gait more readily. In order to run, the stance typically gets wider, and the person leaves a deeper print towards the front of the track, where the toe digs in on takeoff (this also depends on type of snowshoe). When snowshoeing downhill, a human will often glissade, or glide in the show, for long stretches, almost like downhill skiing.
