Dog has yeast infection in ears?
I am almost out of the prescription ear flush. The vet is closed till Monday. Is there anything at home that will work as a good ear flush until I can get to the vet?
Did your vet give you an anti-fungal for the infection too? If your vet only gave you a flush, then the vet isn’t doing a very good job. Just flushing out the infection won’t cure it, it needs to be treated as well.
Yeast infections form in a dog’s ears when they are warm and moist, and don’t get aired out well enough. Dogs who have folded ears are more prone to them, as are dogs lower to the ground (since they are more likely to kick stuff up off the ground into their ears). The key to treating a yeast infection in a dog’s ears is to balance the pH in the dog’s ears.
Vinegar is a great way to do this. Vinegar is a natural enemy of fungus and bacteria, it destroys the fungus while balancing the pH within the ear. You can apply vinegar 2-3 times a day, making sure that it all drains out and doesn’t pool in your dog’s inner ear… otherwise you’ll be dealing with an ear infection later on.
My advice would be to soak a washcloth in vinegar, then rub it gently(!!) on the inside of the dog’s ear where the infection is. Make sure the area is good and soaked in the vinegar. You can rinse it out with water if you like, but that’s not really necessary – the vinegar doesn’t sting, it actually reduces the itching, it will just smell strongly if you don’t rinse it out. The dog won’t mind the smell too much, but you might. You can also use the vinegar the way you use the flush, again making sure that it all drains out and doesn’t pool in the ear.
I had a dog with recurring yeast infections in his ears, the creams they gave us didn’t work or only worked for a week or two, nothing seemed to help. I started using vinegar in his ears and voila, within 2 weeks his infection was cured and it never came back. I strongly suggest it – it’s all natural, won’t hurt your dog at all, and it does work.
