what will the police do if a neighbor complains about a barking dog?
We just moved across town and our puppy is just getting used to his new surroundings. The large back yard backs up to a creek and there are lots of rabbits, squirrels, cats etc running loose. We have only been there a week and our puppy has only been “outside” for 2 days since it was so cold when we first moved, we kept him inside. Now he is outside and sometimes barks quite a bit. The neighbor came over this morning after being outside getting his paper and told us if we don’t shut the dog up, he will call police. What are the police going to do? I didn’t know it was against the law to have a dog outside. What a jerk!!!!!!!!!
It’s not against the law to have a dog outside, it’s against the law to disturb the peace through excessive noise. To you, he’s a jerk. But to him, you are the jerk for forcing him to listen to your dog all day long. He is the one with the law on his side, so you will have to adjust your daily routine with the puppy. If he cannot be left outside without barking excessively, then he needs to stay in the house and only go outside with supervision until he outgrows this or you train him not to bark so much. You can also fix any holes in your fence to limit the number of wild animals getting into your yard, so that the puppy doesn’t have to deal with so many stimulating things.
If he calls the police, he will file a noise complaint. Usually the first time they just come to speak to you about it. However, there are also fines associated with the complaint. And if it happens repeatedly, they can force you to remove the dog from the property (meaning find him a new home). You don’t want to deal with this, so it is in you best interest to keep the puppy more quiet when it is outside now so that the police don’t come knocking on your door.
