How safe is it to keep a dog outside during winter?
My friend has a three-month old Neapolitan Mastiff. Her dad doesn’t really want her keeping the dog inside, so she’s been thinking about keeping it outside. The problem is, we’ve read that dogs without undercoat (such as Mastiffs) and puppies (is three-month old still a puppy?) shouldn’t be left outside in winter because they could get frostbite… The puppy has a cage somewhere in a warmer place in the backyard, but what if it’s not warm enough? By the way, winter where we live in not extremely cold, but not really warm either.
Can she keep the dog outside safely, at least during the day? Also, how can she make it safer?
The breed is generally good with the cold; however, if you are aware of the weather and it will be cold overnight, then DO NOT let your dog sleep outside. They could freeze or get hypothermia. If you just have to absolutely have to keep them outside, then make sure the dog has a bunch of blankets. The day will be fine as long as the dog is active. If the dog is just sitting in the cold all day doing nothing, then the dog can possibly catch a cold or worse. Also the dog is only 3 months. That is a puppy. Te dog is too young to be outside in that weather. Let her dad know and he will have to understand. I don’t think her dad would say he doesn’t care if the dog dies. He should understand. He can let the dog back out after the cold weather.
