service dogs on airplanes

service dogs on airplanes
Can my service dog sit on my lap on an airplane?

I have a registered and certified psychiatric service dog. We have never flown together before. I know she is allowed in the cabin with me but is she limited to only sitting on the floor by my feet or can she also sit on my lap? (She is small).

For safety they must be on the floor for take-off. Some airlines will permit small dogs in your lap during the flight when the seat belt light is off. Check with your airline when you notify them you will be traveling with a PSD.

According to new regulations released just this May and a new guidance released this month, you will need a letter from your doctor to fly with a PSD and you will need to notify the airline at least 48 hours in advance that you will be traveling with one. Failure to provide a letter from a doctor who is treating you for mental illness, printed on his letterhead and dated less than a year ago, or in notifying the airline at least 48 hours in advance you will be traveling with a PSD can result in you being denied boarding. This isn’t true of other kinds of services animals. It isn’t fair, but it is the way it is. You can thank the large number of people trying to pass off pets as service animals and the companies that sell fake certification over the Internet for this change in policy.

Certification and registration don’t really mean anything since anyone can buy those things over the internet with no proof of disability and no evaluation of the dog’s training.
