Opening a Pet Boutique- Any suggestions?

I live in NY and I am interested in opening a dog and cat retail store. More like a boutique I guess. I want to carry top of the line dog food, dog toys, cat food, cat toys, and of course accessories for our best friends! I have been thinking about this for over a year. I just don’t know where to begin. Has anyone opened a store and been successful and can give me advice?

Yes, it is a bad economy right now. But use this time to build up your idea/plan. Start a folder. Do research. Make lists of your products, vendors etc…

To be POSITIVE about your idea…. you can always share a “booth” at some other establishment, if you cannot buy/lease etc your own storefront.

Try creating a line of products and ask your local vet’s office if they would sell them; perhaps on consignment which is less risky for them.

You can create & sell personalized items like T-Shirts (with your motto or logo) from www.cafepress.com

Try doing your business on the web first, then expand. Or from your house/garage if allowed in your city; ask the chamber of commerce about that.

I’ve often thought of starting a business. I still want to but cannot do that right now. Maybe when I retire from regular office work!

But don’t let everyone talk you out of it. You just have to be very creative in order to get around spending a lot of money up front.

No one succeeds being negative!
