If my dog has gluacoma, does that mean she will lose her vision not matter what?
My dog recently got diagnosed with glaucoma and is having laser surgery today to prevent the pressure buildups. Are there dogs out there that have had glaucoma that have not lost all of there vision?
Unfortunately, since dogs don’t get regular, routine eye exams, by the time glaucoma is diagnosed they have probably already lost a significant amount of their vision. Treatment from them on is to prevent further vision loss, and to keep the intraocular pressure under control. If left untreated, the eye eventually will become completely blind, and probably quite painful. At that time, the only treatment is enucleation (removal of the eye). Fortunately, it usually does not occur to the same degree in both eyes, (it frequently occurs from trauma), and a dog can live a great life with limited vision, or with only one eye. If your vet recommends drop therapy, it’s worth it as well, to prevent further complications.
